Willemstad,
The source of the oil that polluted several of our south beaches is found.
" The oil originated from our port. Using pictures from the air, we were able to trace the source. At the issue will be taken care of." This says mr Urwin Sille of the governmental environment department.  He cannot make statements of who is to blame prior to handling of  the island government. "Next Monday the polluter will be taken care of. Oil is not allowed to float on the water, also not in the harbor, there is a penalty." according to Sille. He and four of his officers have been occupied with the oil smudges.

"Due to the weather circumstances the spoil washed to various beaches. It is not common that they suffer from pollution of the port. Wind from the south, and upwards currents caused the inconvenience."
Last Thursday, the beaches from Jan Thiel Bay till Avilla Beach hotel were polluted by oil. Swimmers were recommended to enter the water, because oil smudge was floating on the water. Persons who did take a dive, came back spotted on their skin and clothing.

The only case where someone became ill, is the son of Ronchi Marlin, who went for a swim last Saturday. He suffers eruption from the oil."
"It is not yet clear of the oil that stroke the swimmers last Saturday originated from the same source. We got the message only on Monday and we could not trace it anymore," according to Sille.

Above all, the Sea Aquarium was hit by the sudden pollution. "When we arrived Thursday morning we saw the oil floating. Therefore we could not allow our clients to swim, e.g. with the dolphins, and that is a severe commercial damage. The beasts were not troubled, but of course this is not good for them." tells the director of the Sea Aquarium, Adriaan "Dutch" Schier.

" Today we opened again, but every one is scrubbing because the stairs and platforms are covered. Effectively we can not do business for two days."
At other locations where the oil is present, the outgrowth was less severe.
At Zanzibar in Jan Thiel Bay was almost no swimming, but at Avilla the outcome was minimal, report the employees. Sea Aquarium director Schier:" It does not only causes damage, but also the entire image of Curacao".
