Curacao Reefs are threatened

According to the website ‘shipfantasy.nl’, a 35M live-aboard called the Zeelandia will be operating off the coast of Curaçao and Klein Curaçao, starting in June 2007. This website also states that they will lie over and anchor above the best dive sites as well as in front of the best beach clubs.

Reef Care is asking for the public, our local fishermen, as well as the coastal tourist businesses to protest against the commencement of these operations by the Zeelandia, until it changes its lay over procedure from anchoring to tying up at a permanent mooring or dock. Based on the size of the Zeelandia it would be dropping an anchor between 350-400 kg on a heavy chain with links of some 20 cm. Laying and retrieving this anchor will cause permanent destruction to the reef as well as to the bottom structure where no reefs are present. Even sand or gravel bottoms will be completely ploughed up by the chain as the ship swings in currents and wind, destroying life in such areas. Such damage will impact not only the tourist diving business, but the coastal fishermen as well.

A new type of dive tourism is of course welcome, but only if it is operated responsibly with permanent mooring buoys in place, suited to a ship of this size.

Curaçaose koraalriffen bedreigd

Volgens de web-site ‘shipfantasy.nl, zal per juni 2007 een 35 m lang zogenaamd ‘live-aboard’ duik cruiseschip van start gaan met tochten langs de kust van Curaçao en Klein Curaçao. De website vermeld ook dat het schip boven de beste duikplaatsen en bij de beste stranden zal gaan liggen.

Reef Care vraagt iedereen, de vissers zowel als de toeristische ondernemingen aan de kust te protesteren tegen het starten van de tochten van dit duik-cruiseschip zolang het schip van plan is te gaan ankeren op de verschillende ligplaatsen. Afgaand op de grootte van het schip zal het een anker van zo’n 350-400 kg moeten laten vallen aan een zware ketting met schakels van zo’n 20 cm lang. Het voor anker liggen, warbij de ketting gedurig over de bodem schraapt en vervolgens het weer ophalen van zo’n anker, zal permanente schade toebrengen aan zowel het koraalrif als aan de bodemstructuur waar geen riffen zijn. Ook zand of stenige bodems worden met name door de zware ketting volledig omgeploegd waardoor het leven op dergelijke plekken verdwijnt. Dergelijke schade treft niet alleen de toeristische duikondernemingen, maar ook de lokale kustvissers.

Een nieuwe vorm van duiktoerisme is natuurlijk van harte welkom, maar dan wel op een verantwoorde manier met vaste meerboeien voor het schip op de plaatsen die het wil aandoen.
